Editing a Video

Without having to resort to powerful video-editing tools, there are still a lot of very effective packages available at low or no cost.  Some examples are:

  1. If you are using a Mac, then you can use iMovie (which usually comes free). Just drag and drop your video file(s) into the package and you’ll be able to add titles, cut and join clips, enhance the sound, and a lot more.   See Apple's iMovie help.
  2. If you are using a Windows PC, there are many options, including another free tool which is somewhat hidden away. The most recent version of what used to be Windows Movie Maker is now embedded within Windows 10’s Photos appAn introduction is available here.
  3. Camtasia (see the previous section) is also a powerful editing tool (as we noted earlier, also allows ‘green screen’ overlays).
  4. There are a lot of low-cost and free tools out there, so you can simply have a search online and see what best suits your needs. Remember to stick to recognised suppliers, or well-regarded tools with professional reviews.

Again, there are lots of options for mobile devices. Obviously, such apps are going to be limited given the difference in power between a tablet/phone and a desktop/laptop, but some are surprisingly effective, particularly on high-end tablets. Many are in fact used by TV news journalists to edit footage whilst on location. Have a search in the app stores for your particular device.
