How do I make a screen recording in Quicktime ?
Instructors can record their voice and computer screen using the QuickTime application, which is built into most Apple Mac computers. Videos can be uploaded to your My Media on Canvas and embedded into a content area on your course(s) for students to view.
Note: Best practice is to make a short test screen recording video before embarking on a full-lecture screen recording.
Mac OSX comes with Quicktime Player built-in and although most people might only use this for watching videos, it can actually also make videos and screencasts. Let's see where to start.
- On your Mac computer, open the QuickTime Player app (>Applications / QuickTime). This displays the QuickTime application in the menu bar.
- Click File> New Screen Recording
Note: You may need to grant permissions for the QuickTime Player.app to have access to record your computer's screen. Simply Open System Preferences to select this.
You can click Options to control what you record for example, you can set the location where you want to save your screen recording, or include the pointer or clicks in the screen recording.
Be sure to verify your Options to select microphone and cursor option.
Note: You may want to confirm the microphone selection and test it by clicking on the Mac System Preferences / Sound.
Click Record. To stop recording, click the Stop Recording button in the menu bar (or use the Touch Bar).
Best practice is to make a short test screen recording video before embarking on a full-lecture screen recording.
- After processing, QuickTime will display the screen recording video.
- You can preview your video screen recording using the playback controls.
(Note: You can edit these (adding titles, credits, overlays, trim, add other segments, etc.) if you want, using iMovie which also comes free with a Mac – but for simple recordings, you might only need to use Quicktime itself.)
- Now you can upload and share your recording on Canvas to share with your students.
